Working Hours & Leave are Most Important to Younger Generations

With a global push for greater work-life balance, today’s youngest generations - Generation Z and millennials - say that working hours and leave are the most important employee benefits. This finding is shared in the Employee Happiness Index 2019, based on a study of over 19,000 employees across various industries and generations. Behind the research is HR tech company, Benify.

Just how different is each generation when it comes to their needs and wants? Generation X, millennials and Generation Z all rate working hours and leave as the most important workplace benefit. What’s more, all three generations rate health and wellness benefits as the second most important.

This finding supports the developing trend where we see more companies around the globe introducing shorter working weeks and where employees working from home is becoming more commonplace.

Baby boomers were the only generation not to rate working hours and leave as most important; instead working hours and leave comes in second place for baby boomers, understandably behind the pension.

“Today, we’re seeing more organisations support the lifestyle of their employees and support ‘the whole person’. We see more employers allowing employees to adjust their work schedules and to work remotely when needed as a way to support their work-life balance and lifestyle overall.”
says Viktor Håkansson, Head of Benify Marketplace.

About the study
Approximately 19,100 participants from 61 organisations took part in the 2019 edition of Benify’s benefits survey, Benify Score. HR managers and employees were asked to answer a series of questions about benefits, engagement and communication. All responses were anonymous. The most important insights from the study can be found in the Employee Happiness Index 2019, which you can download for free.
