Employees Say Work is Still the Number One Cause of Stress

European employees say that work-life balance and work itself are their biggest causes of stress today despite that millions of employees are currently working from home. This finding is revealed in The Future of Work Report: Employee Benefits and Work Trends in Europe – a study of more than 58,000 employees across Europe exploring the effects the pandemic has had on how we work, what employees say they want, and what the future of work will be. The study was commissioned by award-winning benefits technology provider, Benify, and conducted by global public opinion and data company, YouGov.

When participants were asked what their biggest causes of stress currently are, the response was clear – employees say they are stressed by work and work-life balance. 49% of participants in France, 47% in the UK, 46% in Germany and Sweden, 39% in Denmark and 31% in the Netherlands say work is the number source of stress, while 35% of participants in Germany and France, 34% in the UK, 32% in Sweden, and 27% in Denmark say work-life balance is the second biggest source of stress.

On these findings, Josefine Söderqvist, Director of Human Resources at Benify, says:

“Even though employees may, in theory, have more flexibility around work than previously with remote working, stress from work and the struggle to achieve work-life balance cannot be solved by simply changing environment. In many ways, covid-19 has made the issue of work-life balance more complex than before. Employers need to create a working culture where employee well-being is given the highest priority. Employees need greater support from their employers to achieve work-life balance.”

About the study
The survey was conducted during the first quarter of 2021 by YouGov, on behalf of Benify, in the form of an anonymous online survey with more than 58,000 participants aged 18 and older in the UK, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France and the Netherlands.
